Porto Novo: A Glimpse Into Tradition and Nature

My journey began in Porto Novo, Benin’s capital, where I explored the serene

• Visit Adjarra Village – Known for its traditional drum-making and vibrant local life, this village is a cultural treasure trove.

• Navigate the Black River – A peaceful ride through lush mangroves and scenic waterways. This cruise provided a unique perspective on the region’s natural beauty and local fishing communities.

• Visit the floating village of Ganvie – One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Ganvie, a floating village built on Lake Nokoué. Known as the “Venice of Africa,” this incredible community is entirely built on stilts, with homes, markets, and even schools floating above the water. A boat ride through Ganvie offered an unforgettable look into this unique way of life.

Cotonou: A blend of Art, History and Luxury

In Cotonou, Benin’s largest city, I experienced a perfect mix of modernity and tradition. Some must-visit spots include:

• Amazon Statue – A striking monument dedicated to the fearless Dahomey Amazons, a group of legendary female warriors.
• Longest Graffiti Wall – A colorful, dynamic display of street art that tells the story of Benin’s culture and history

• Dantokpa Market – A bustling marketplace where you can find everything from local spices and fabrics to handmade crafts.

Ouidah: A Journey Through History 

My final stop was Ouidah, a city steeped in history and spirituality.

• Python Temple – A sacred site where pythons are revered and symbolize protection and strength.
• Sacred Forest – A peaceful, mystical forest home to statues and shrines representing the Vodun (Voodoo) religion.
• The Museum of the Zinsou Foundation – A contemporary art museum showcasing Benin’s artistic heritage.
• Slave Route – A poignant, historical trail that follows the path enslaved Africans took before being sent to the Americas, offering a moving tribute to Benin’s past.

Restaurant:

• Face A La Mer – This seaside restaurant is the perfect place to indulge in fresh seafood while enjoying stunning ocean views.

Benin is a land of rich traditions, deep history, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re exploring the floating village of Ganvie, indulging in local cuisine in Cotonou, or reflecting on history in Ouidah, this country has something for every traveler. Practical Tips for Traveling in Benin

• Getting Around: Use taxis and moto-taxis (zemidjans), negotiate fares in advance, and consider renting a car with a driver for long-distance travel. Public transport is available but can be unreliable. A great option is hiring a local guide—this is what I did! My guide picked me up from my hotel and took me everywhere, making the trip easy and very safe.
• Currency: The official currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). ATMs are available in major cities, but cash is widely preferred. Exchange money at banks or authorized offices.
• Packing Essentials: Bring lightweight clothing for the hot climate, mosquito repellent, a power adapter (Type C & E, 220V), sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection. Keep copies of important travel documents.
