Ranked as the safest country in the world, Iceland is a dream destination with unparalleled landscapes and cozy stays. Here’s a complete guide to experiencing Iceland’s natural wonders, attractions, and best dining spots.
Getting Around Iceland: Choosing the Right Transportation Option
Exploring Iceland is best with reliable transportation since public transit is limited outside Reykjavik. Here are some top options to consider:
1. Renting a Car
Renting a car is ideal for exploring Iceland at your own pace. I went with Blue Car Rental, one of the best companies in Iceland, conveniently located at Keflavík Airport. Blue Car Rental offers a range of vehicles, including 4x4s for rugged terrains, unlimited mileage, and well-maintained cars suited for Iceland’s weather and roads.
2. Hiring a Private Driver
For a more relaxed experience, consider hiring a private driver. This can be ideal for groups wanting a customized trip and allows you to sit back and enjoy the scenic views. Keep in mind it’s best to book in advance, as private drivers can be in high demand.
3. Booking Guided Tours with Transportation Included
Guided tours are another option if you’re not comfortable driving or prefer a structured experience. Many tours cover the Golden Circle, South Coast, and Northern Lights and provide a knowledgeable guide. This option, however, limits your flexibility to explore independently.
Each option offers a unique experience based on your travel style, so choose what best suits your needs!
Day 1: Arrival, Blue Lagoon, and Reykjavik
After arriving at Keflavík Airport, start with a visit to the Blue Lagoon, located about 20 minutes from the airport—a perfect way to relax and kick off your Icelandic journey.
Blue Lagoon: This famous geothermal spa is a must-visit, with mineral-rich blue waters and black lava rocks. Soak in the warm waters and treat yourself to a silica mud mask.
Explore Reykjavik: After relaxing, drive to Reykjavik and spend the evening exploring its highlights:

- Tres Locos: If you’re craving something lively, this spot serves Mexican-inspired cuisine with delicious tacos, guacamole, and margaritas in a vibrant setting.
Overnight at the Bubble Hotel: After dinner, drive 1.5 hours to Bubble Hotel—the “5 Million Star Hotel”—where you can sleep under the stars in a heated, transparent bubble, perfect for stargazing and a unique overnight stay before exploring the Golden Circle.
Day 2: The Golden Circle and Glacier Lagoon
After a restful night, start your day early to explore Iceland’s famous Golden Circle route.

Drive to Jökulsárlón: After Gullfoss, continue your journey southeast to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (around a 4-hour drive) to stay at Glacier Lagoon Hotel. This is the best hotel in the area, offering stunning views and an amazing property. Enjoy amenities like an outdoor spa and hot tub for a relaxing evening after your day of exploration.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach: Next, head to Reynisfjara Beach, famous for its black sand, towering basalt columns, and striking sea stacks. It’s a unique and photogenic location but stay back from the strong waves!
After Reynisfjara, the drive back to Reykjavik offers a fantastic opportunity to see three breathtaking waterfalls—Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Gljúfrabúi—as well as the iconic abandoned DC-3 plane on Sólheimasandur Beach.
Skógafoss Waterfall: One of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls, Skógafoss drops 60 meters, creating a mist that often forms rainbows on sunny days. Climb the staircase beside it for a spectacular view from above.
Seljalandsfoss and Gljúfrabúi Waterfalls: A short drive away is Seljalandsfoss, a waterfall you can walk behind for a unique perspective. Just a few minutes away, you’ll find the hidden Gljúfrabúi Waterfall, tucked inside a cliff opening for a more secluded experience.
Gljúfrabúi Waterfalls
Abandoned DC-3 Plane: Make a quick stop to see the famous abandoned DC-3 plane on Sólheimasandur Beach. The eerie remains make for an iconic photo spot, though be prepared for a 45-minute walk from the parking lot to the plane.
Return to Reykjavik: After an adventurous day, drive back to Reykjavik (approximately 2.5 hours) for your final night in Iceland. If you want to take it easy, consider spending an extra night in Vik to pace out these activities.
Day 5: Reykjavik and Departure
Spend your final day exploring Reykjavik or grabbing any last-minute souvenirs before heading to the airport.
Reykjavik’s Highlights: If time allows, revisit some of the city’s highlights or discover more local gems like the Sky Lagoon or Indoor Lava Show.
Overnight at The Edition: For your final night, I recommend staying at The Edition, a luxurious Marriott property. This hotel boasts a great spa, delicious breakfast options, and stylish accommodations, making it the perfect place to unwind before your departure.
Departure from Keflavík Airport: Drive to Keflavík Airport to catch your flight home, taking with you memories of Iceland’s awe-inspiring landscapes and unforgettable experiences.
