One trip. Two destinations. And in some cases, a hotel the airline pays for.
Before you book your next international flight, check whether your airline offers a stopover program. Instead of passing through a country and spending your connection inside an airport, you could turn that stop into another chapter of your trip.
Iceland, Portugal, Turkey, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates all have airline programs worth knowing about. Here’s what you can get, what you’ll pay for, and where to book.
What is an airline stopover program?
A stopover lets you spend time in a connecting destination before continuing your journey. Some airlines let you add that visit without additional airfare. Others offer complimentary hotels or discounted stays.
The key is knowing what “free” covers. You still purchase your airline ticket, and a free stopover does not automatically mean free accommodation, meals, or activities.
| Country | Airline and destination | Main benefit | Hotel included? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iceland | Icelandair — Iceland/Reykjavík | Up to seven nights on most fares, with no additional airfare | No |
| Portugal | TAP Air Portugal — Lisbon or Porto | Up to ten days with no extra ticket cost for the stopover | No; partner discounts available |
| Turkey | Turkish Airlines — Istanbul | Complimentary hotel accommodation on qualifying itineraries | Yes; nights depend on departure country and cabin |
| Qatar | Qatar Airways — Doha | Discounted stopover packages for up to four nights | Paid; starts at $14 per person for one night, sharing a room |
| United Arab Emirates | Emirates — Dubai; Etihad — Abu Dhabi | Dubai Connect benefits or Etihad’s stopover hotel offer | Yes, subject to each program’s requirements |
1. Iceland: Turn your connection into another adventure
Airline: Icelandair
Flying across the Atlantic? Icelandair lets you add Iceland to your itinerary with no additional airfare. Most fares allow a stopover of up to seven nights.
That gives you time to explore Reykjavík or plan a wider Iceland adventure before continuing to your final destination.
What’s included: The stopover without additional airfare. Accommodation, food, transportation, and activities are your responsibility.
How to book: Start on Icelandair’s stopover page, enter your origin and final destination, and add your Iceland stopover dates. Check the allowance for your chosen fare before paying.
My planning tip: Price your hotel and transportation alongside your flight. A stopover can be a great deal, but those extra days still need a budget.

2. Portugal: Up to ten days in Lisbon or Porto
Airline: TAP Air Portugal
TAP lets you add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto for up to ten days without an extra charge on your ticket for that stop.
You can build it into the outbound or return journey. Ten days gives you room to make Portugal a substantial part of your vacation rather than a quick airport escape.
What’s included: The stopover and access to partner offers. Your hotel is not complimentary, although accommodation discounts may be available.
How to book: Visit TAP’s Portugal Stopover page, search your route, and choose Lisbon or Porto with your preferred dates. Review the final itinerary and total fare before purchasing.
My planning tip: Choose your stopover length around what you actually want to do. You don’t need to use all ten days to make the offer worthwhile.

3. Turkey: Free hotel nights in Istanbul
Airline: Turkish Airlines
Here’s an option that actually includes a hotel.
For qualifying round-trip journeys originating in the United States, Turkish Airlines offers two complimentary nights in a four-star hotel for economy passengers or three nights in a five-star or boutique hotel for business passengers. Other departure countries may have different allowances.
What’s included: Accommodation with breakfast at participating hotels.
How to book: Check your itinerary against the Stopover in Istanbul requirements, book your qualifying ticket, and apply for accommodation at least 72 hours before the relevant departure. Obtain your hotel voucher before traveling.
The connection must be between 20 hours and seven days. The program requires qualifying round-trip Turkish Airlines-operated flights, with outbound and return flights in the same reservation. Fare exclusions apply.
A longer stopover does not mean every night is free—only your approved hotel allowance is covered.
Check Turkish Airlines’ requirements and apply
4. Qatar: Doha hotel stays starting at $14 per person
Airline: Qatar Airways
Qatar’s standard stopover offer gives you access to discounted hotels in Doha, with stays of up to four nights for transits between 12 and 96 hours.
What’s included: A paid hotel package. The advertised entry price is $14 per person for one night, based on two people sharing a room. It is not $14 for an entire four-night stay.
At the time of checking, standard-package starting prices per person were:
| Stay | Starting package price per person |
|---|---|
| One night | $14 |
| Two nights | $23 |
| Three nights | $49 |
| Four nights | $76 |
Prices depend on hotel category, availability, and stay length. Room extras cost more; breakfast depends on the selected package and hotel.
How to book: Start with Qatar Airways’ official stopover page, check your flights and dates, then select the hotel package that fits your transit.

5. United Arab Emirates: Two airlines offering free hotel benefits
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are in the same country, but their airline programs work differently.
Dubai with Emirates
Emirates’ Dubai Connect program can provide a complimentary hotel, applicable meals, and airport transfers during a qualifying long connection.
This is a connection-support benefit: you generally cannot choose a longer layover when a better connection is available and assume the hotel will be included.
How to book: Check eligibility during booking or through Manage Your Booking, then request Dubai Connect in advance. Confirm the applicable booking deadline with Emirates.

Abu Dhabi with Etihad
Etihad advertises up to two complimentary hotel nights through its Abu Dhabi Stopover program.
How to book: Begin on Etihad’s official stopover page and select your flights, stopover duration, and participating hotel. Confirm the free-night offer is applied and obtain your hotel voucher.
This gives you another UAE option if you want to build a hotel stay into your journey.

How to make your stopover worth it
Before you pay, compare the complete trip cost: airfare, any additional hotel nights, transfers, meals, and activities. A complimentary hotel is useful, but it doesn’t automatically make that airline’s itinerary the cheapest choice.
Check entry requirements for your passport, leave enough time to get back to the airport, and arrange any hotel benefit before departure. Keep the confirmation or voucher with your travel documents.
Most of all, give yourself enough time to enjoy the place. The goal is to turn a connection into an experience you’ll remember.
Which would you choose: Iceland, Portugal, Turkey, Qatar, or the UAE?
