Top Things to Do in Ecuador

Ecuador is full of incredible activities and attractions, each offering a unique experience. Here are some of the highlights from my trip:

Lake Quilotoa – One of the most beautiful places I visited was Lake Quilotoa, a stunning crater lake located in the Andes. The turquoise water, surrounded by dramatic cliffs, made for an awe-inspiring sight. The hike down to the lake is challenging but absolutely worth it. The experience is exhilarating—the sound of the water crashing down and the mist hitting your face is unforgettable.

Middle of the World (Mitad del Mundo) – Ecuador’s famous Mitad del Mundo, or Middle of the World, is a must-see landmark. It’s located just outside Quito and marks the spot where the equator divides the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. You can stand with one foot in each hemisphere and enjoy some interesting interactive exhibits at the museum. It’s a fun and educational stop, and a great place to snap some unique photos.

Basilica del Voto Nacional – In Quito, you’ll find the Basilica del Voto Nacional, a stunning neo-Gothic church that is one of the tallest structures in the city. La Casa del Árbol (The Treehouse) – Nestled on the side of a mountain in Baños, La Casa del Árbol is a must-visit for anyone looking for a mix of fun, adventure, and incredible views. This small, quirky treehouse is famous for its “Swing at the End of the World”, a swing that takes you soaring above the Andes mountains, with breathtaking views of the Pastaza River valley below.

The Hands of Pachamama – is a striking and spiritual landmark located near Baños, Ecuador. Known for its stunning views and unique, symbolic design, this monument honors Pachamama, the Inca goddess of nature, fertility, and the Earth. The monument is a fascinating stop for those looking to connect with local culture, spirituality, and the surrounding natural beauty of the region.

Closest to the Moon: Chimborazo – One of the most unique experiences in Ecuador is standing at the closest point on Earth to the Moon, which is on the Chimborazo Volcano. Due to the Earth’s bulge at the equator, Chimborazo’s summit is actually farther from the Earth’s core than Mount Everest’s peak, making it the furthest point from the center of the Earth. You can hike around the base of the volcano or simply visit the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve for amazing views of the towering peak and surrounding landscapes.

It’s perched on a hill with a panoramic view of Baños and the surrounding mountains, making it an excellent place to relax and enjoy a great meal after a day of sightseeing. Whether you’re in the mood for traditional Ecuadorian cuy (guinea pig), fresh seafood, or a hearty steak, Vista Hermosa delivers an unforgettable dining experience.

• Public Transport: In cities like Quito and Guayaquil, public buses are the primary mode of transportation, and they are both affordable and reliable. Taxis and Uber are also available in most cities.

• Domestic Flights: Ecuador has several regional airports, and flights are a quick and convenient way to get around, especially if you’re traveling to places like the Galapagos Islands or the Amazon.

• Buses: Buses are a popular way to travel between towns and cities. It’s an affordable option, and the views along the way are amazing, especially in the Andean region.

• Ecuador uses the United States Dollar (USD), making it convenient for many travelers, particularly from the U.S. Credit cards are widely accepted in most cities, but it’s always a good idea to carry cash, especially in rural areas.

Packing Essentials

• Clothing: Ecuador’s weather varies with the altitude. In cities like Quito and Baños, the climate can range from chilly to warm, so packing layers is key. The Amazon region is hot and humid, so bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.

• Altitude: In the Andean highlands, including Quito and Baños, the altitude can cause sickness. Take it easy the first few days, drink plenty of water, and avoid overexerting yourself.

• Adapter: Ecuador uses 110V electricity, with Type A and B plugs, so make sure to bring the appropriate adapter for your electronics.
